Ignoring the protests of a handful of students, the Ravenshaw University authorities on Tuesday refused to recall their Monday’s decision of rusticating two students from the university for throwing bombs at the office of the Vice-Chancellor. Even as some students continued to stage a dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office for the second day, the authorities showed no sign of leniency.
“The decision to rusticate the two students was taken after the recommendation of the Staff Council and as of now there is no such proposal to annul the decision,” said Vice-Chancellor Prof BC Tripathy.
He, however, added that in the event the Staff Council coming up with any such proposal in future, the authorities will weigh all options before reconsidering the decision. The university on Monday had rusticated two students for two years and debarred them from appearing at four consecutive semester examinations.
Aditya Alfa and Sudhansu Kumar were found guilty of hurling at least five bombs at the VC’s office late on Sunday night causing extensive
damages. The university authorities had on Monday handed over the case to the police. The police, however, have not yet arrested anybody in this connection.
Protesting against the university authorities’ decision and terming it “unilateral”, a few students have been staging a dharna in the campus demanding recall of the rustication notification. “There is no evidence to prove that Aditya and Sudhansu were involved in the incident,” said an agitating student.
