Rairangpur woman Lecturer commits suicide

PNS

Mayurbhanj SP Smith Parmar on Sunday suspended an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Jharpokharia police station in the district in connection with the suicide of a woman Lecturer of Rairangpur in the district.

The suspended officer was Prasant Swain.

Reports said the body of the Lecturer was found hanging at her hostel room at around 8:30 pm on Saturday. Besides, a suicide note was also found near the body.

The family members of the deceased Lecturer have accused ASI Swain, (Investigating Officer of the case) for not giving them a note suspected to be a suicide letter recovered by the police from the spot.

Sources said the woman was allegedly raped by a youth of Keonjhar, who is said to be a distant relative. While the victim had immediately approached the cops and registered a case with the Jharapokharia police on October 30, police failed to take any action for days.

Alleging police inaction leading to the suicide, family members of the deceased Lecturer have demanded justice.

The SP besides suspending the ASI for dereliction of duty has also transferred Jharapokharia PS IIC Sharat Mohanty to the SP Office.

Later, the police swung into action and arrested the main accused Soumyaranjan from Cuttack. Two of his associates Debaranjan Mandal and Sujit Mandal were also taken into custody. Sources said a few more arrests are likely in the case.
