Even as there is no cyclone threat to Odisha, several parts of the State are expected to experience heavy rainfall as the deep depression formed over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours, said the Regional Office of Indian Metrological Department (IMD) here on Friday.

Moreover, it is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 36 hours and head north-northwest wards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada by December 17 afternoon, said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

IMD Regional Director HR Biswas said several parts of the State would receive rainfall from December 16 with chances of thunderstorms at one or two places.

The rainfall activity would mostly be over the districts in interior Odisha and a few places in the coastal areas.

“The system is likely to move north-northwest wards and cross Andhra Pradesh on December 17.

Under its impact the bordering districts of Odisha including Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput would receive heavy rainfall,” said Biswas.

Biswas further informed that fishermen have been advised not to venture into west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal on December 16 and 17.
