Rainfall likely in 24 to 72 hours

While most parts of Odisha continue to reel under dry and humid conditions, the Met department on Wednesday predicted rainfalls in the State in the next 72 hours.

“A trough line has formed over Punjab up to the north-east Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, some parts of Odisha would receive rainfalls in the next 24 hours. However, there is a possibility of more rainfalls in the next 48 hours from July 11,” the Met office said.

Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar Director Sarat Chandra Sahu said the temperature and humidity levels in the State have gone up due to the blowing of hot wind from the south-west direction from Telangana over coastal Odisha.

He, however, said there is a possibility of formation of a low pressure off the Odisha coast by July 11-12 and that would trigger more rainfalls in the State and lead to a drastic fall in temperature and humidity levels. Sahu said the State has received rainfall of below 51 per cent of the average so far this monsoon.

Power crisis continues in State

Power crisis in the State likely to prevail for next four to five days with three units of the NTPC and two OPGC units failed to generate power due to technical snags.

Power consumers across the State, including of State capital Bhubaneswar, have been experiencing power cuts for long hours since Monday.

Energy Secretary PK Jena on Tuesday said power generation has gone down as the two units of NTPC Kaniha and one unit of TTPS Talcher failed all of a sudden and two units of the OPGC plant tripped.

According to reports, the State now gets 2,750 MW of power daily as against the required 3,000 MW.

Sources said the Government will officially announce the timing of power cuts soon.
