Rain: Puri heritage pond wall caves in

PNS

Amid incessant rains over past two days in Puri, the boundary wall of famous Markanda pond collapsed on Monday.

Around 70 feet of stone boundary wall in west direction fell into the pond on the morning, said local sources.

After the wall collapsed, a patch of public road running closer to wall faced damages causing inconveniences to the residents. Though nobody clearly informed the exact timing, yet locals said the incident might have happened during morning when there was a continuous rain in the town.

Getting information, officials of the local administration, including police, visited the spot and took stock of the situation. On instructions, the broken road was barricaded from both ends to stop entry of public.

A few years back, a portion of same wall in south direction had also caved in during rain which was set right after some days. During the incident, nearly 50 feet road closer to the boundary had faced severe damage.

It is noteworthy here that the holy pond named after sage Markanda is important because of being the first among five holy Tirthas situated in Puri.

Myth has it that sage Markanda had practiced Tapsya on the bank of the pond in early age. Since it is verily linked to the Jagannath Temple, lakhs of pilgrims and tourists visit the holy pond every year.
