The State Government ordered a high level administrative inquiry into the burning of Begunia police station in Khurda district by angry mob on Sunday evening.
The incident took place after body of a youth, who was picked up by the police earlier, was found hanging from a tree at Badabran village.
Home Secretary UN Behera said the Inspector General of Police, Cental Range and the Khurda District Collector would probe the incident and submit reports separately within next three days. Behera said in order to ensure an impartial probe, the Begunia police station IIC had already been transferred. Meanwhile, on Monday, Khurda District Collector Rupa Mishra visited the Begunia police station and started a preliminary inquiry.
According to the local people, the police were responsible for the death of Hemanta Nayak from Bhimapur village. Accusing the police of having inflicted custodial torture against Nayak leading to his demise, the irate villagers ransacked the police station before setting it on fire. While the police station was set ablaze, the police personnel, failing to control the mob, fled. However, the police denied the allegation.
On getting information, four platoons of security personnel rushed from the district headquarters to the spot to control the situation. According to Khurda Superintendent of Police DN Gochayat, Begunia police had picked up four people in connection with an eve teasing case and later let off all except Nayak.
