In a major change in the programme schedule of the Rama Devi Women’s Autonomous College’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on November 30, President Pranab Mukherjee will reach the college late by an hour to inaugurate the event.

While the President was earlier scheduled to attend the college’s celebrations for an hour from 4.15pm to 5.15pm, now his visiting time has been changed from 5.15pm to 6.15pm.

Besides, the President will not inaugurate a 7-foot tall commemorative statue of three women carrying the globe on their heads symbolizing women empowerment. Due to some security issues the Commissionerate of Police have canceled the President’s programme of unveiling the statute, informed Principal Chitrangada Samanta Singhar at a Press meet here on Friday.

“We have planned to get the statute inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on November 30 morning. Besides, a rally involving the college fraternities, including the students, inside the campus will be flagged off by the Chief Minister in the morning at 9.30 am,” the Principal added. The President would felicitate three alumni of the college, including internationally-acclaimed Karate player Valena Valentina, sprinter Srabani Nanda and college’s best graduate (2013-14) Swagatika Behera, she informed.

A documentary on the ideals of Ramadevi and the glorious history of the institution will be released on the occasion.

In another positive development, the State Higher Education Department has approved to sanction a total of Rs 28 crore for construction of various infrastructure facilities in the college. The total grant includes Rs15 crore for construction of three hostels of 400 seats each, Rs 3crore for a new library building and Rs 5 crore each for construction of a convention centre with 1,000 seats and an academic building for junior college, a notice from the Higher Education Department said.
