Posco wall work likely to be halted ahead

KAHNU NANDA

The boundary wall construction of Posco project progressed peacefully on the fourth day on Tuesday at Dadhi Bamanpada hamlet in Nuagaon gram panchayat amid a decision to stall the work taken by none other than the project supporters.

A local forest committee of Nave Gharapada village held a meeting and decided to oppose the wall work. The villagers were angry as Posco was yet to fulfill their demand for compensation. The disgruntled villagers also decided to draw the attention of the district administration about not getting adequate rehabilitation package.

Notably, a portion of the Posco wall has been completed at Dadhi Bamanpada village, while the next village where the wall will be built is Nave Gharpada. Since the villagers here have resolved to hold an agitation, protesting the wall, the ongoing construction is feared to face a roadblock ahead.

Similarly, a few leaders from Nuagaon panchayat met the Nave Gharapada forest committee on Tuesday and discussed the Posco impasse and illegal act of the Posco authorities. The local residents decided to oppose the wall work unitedly, informed Nuagaon sarpanch Anjali Pradhan.

On the other hand, the Posco authorities described the ongoing wall work as progressing peacefully with full support of the residents. The assigned construction agency has given the work to a host of local forest committees. Hence, the work is underway with full support of the locals, the company officials claimed.

“We feel a few persons with an ulterior motive are trying to halt the work, but they will not succeed as a large number of local people want the construction work to continue,” stated Posco general manager SN Singh.
