PNS

The State Government has asked the district authorities to be vigilant during the ensuing panchayat elections.

The Department of Home (DoH) has directed the District Magistrates to remain alert over possible law and order situations.

The alert was issued after Home Principal Secretary Asit Tripathy, DGP KB Singh, Home Special Secretary lalit Das and other senior officers held a discussion on the election scenario here on Thursday.

Earlier, DGP Singh had already urged the IGs, DIGs and SPs to remain alert and maintain law and order during the polls.

Now, the DoH directive was issued following a request from the State Election Commission, a release from the SEC said.

The SEC’s recommendations were based on intelligence inputs and the SEC asked the Government to be vigilant in sensitive areas.

The District Magistrates have been asked to deploy more security personnel in sensitive areas and ensure coordination among the police and administrative wings during the rural polls.

Meanwhile, the Government has declared paid holidays on polling days for employees of industrial units and other business establishments.

The SEC had recommended this to the Government, the SEC release added.

Earlier, the State Government had also declared holidays for its employees and those of the corporations and boards to be able to cast their votes at the block level besides three days of leave to those who would work outside their polling booths.
