Police upbeat over anti-Maoist ops in KBK

PNS

DGP Sanjeev Marik is happy with the success of the police in curbing Maoist activities in the KBK zone, particularly after elimination of Sunadhar, a dreaded Red extremist in Malkangiri. Marik said the police would further intensify combing and other anti-Maoist operations in the bordering districts in the coming days.

The DGP was briefing the media after a review meeting with Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mahapatra, Border Security Forces and COBRA officials at the District Police Office here on Wednesday. Mahapatra has earned laurels after a number of successful anti-Maoist operations and bringing Maoist sympathisers to social mainstream.

Marik sought more Central Forces to cover up the prevailing gap in the counter-insurgency operations at several places. The meeting focused on Malkangiri district, which is worst-affected by Maoist menace.

As the district is sharing border with lWE-hit Chhattisgarh, it was stressed that intelligence sharing and search operations would be strengthened in the district, he told the media.

A better coordination  between the all the agencies engaged in the anti-Maoist operation like district police, BSF, COBRA, SOG and State police would keep a check on Maoist activities in the district  and the border zones.

Such offensives are good in terms of creating pressure on the ultras as they also force Maoist cadres to consider surrendering as an option, the DGP said.

While replying to a query on the allegations made by Maoist leaders, the DGP rubbished the ultra's claim that they killed Sunadhar and two of his associates as they were unarmed when the encounter took place. Arms were recovered from them after the exchange of fire, Marik said, adding that the rebel leaders make such false allegations after every encounter to get sympathy from people.

To another query, the DGP said police are regularly monitoring the activities and financial condition of the surrendered rebels to ensure that they don’t again joint Maoist outfits. The proposal to set up a rehabilitation colony in Malkangiri for all surrendered rebels is under consideration, he said.
