Police on Saturday made six assailants, allegedly involved in extortion, parade the streets of Daltonganj to send out a message to the commoners that they need not be afraid of such “thugs” anymore.
Earlier in the day, cops arrested the six men facing extortion charges and recovered Rs.23,000 cash from their possession, Palamu Superintendent of Police Chandan Kr Sinha said.
A police official carrying a mike went on telling people on the street to have a look at these and not be afraid of them while the six men paraded on the road.
The public on the street remained indifferent to the pronouncement of the police and continued to pose repulsive to the faces of apprehended men.
The SP said it was done for twin purposes – to build faith in common public and to deter any youth from joining such gangs.
Lawyers are divided on this parade. Some said parading of extortionists looks good in the Hindi films only and this should be on the “not to do” list of the police.
SP added these six men are aides of gangster Dabloo Singh, and they extorted money every week from autorickshaw drivers. However, no victim of extortion found courage to lodge an FIR, police said.
The six caught and paraded have been identified as Tabrez, Dharmender, Manish, Mukesh, Surender and Sanjiv.
