Plea for court monitoring of Odisha chit fund probe

The Supreme Court would hold hearing of a plea of Alok Jena, petitioner in the chit fund scam, on April 6 for court monitoring of the investigation led by the CBI in Odisha.

In a prayer, Jena has requested the apex court to monitor the CBI probe through a team. He has made the plea to the court in the wake of media reports regarding slowing down of the CBI probe in Odisha.

The petitioner last week submitted some additional documents before the court as regards recent developments relating to the chit fund scam investigation.

Sources said the petitioner in his additional documents has mentioned the name of a legal luminary, a lawyer, a top police officer and some bureaucrats allegedly involved in the scam.

In the Interlocutor Application (IA), the petitioner has averred that there have been a lot of developments since the court ordered a CBI probe into the chit fund scam in Odisha and a lot of factual information pertaining to the probe of the mega scam has been available which have an important bearing on the hearing of the IA seeking court monitoring of the probe.

Jena has also stated that illegal chit fund collection is still going on notwithstanding the ongoing CBI probe and huge public outcry over the chit fund scams in Odisha. The RBI also wrote to the State Finance Department seeking action against such erring chit fund operators, he has added.

While directing the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to probe the chit fund scam in Odisha, the court had mentioned, “We do not for the present consider it necessary to constitute a monitoring team to monitor the progress of the investigation into the scam. But we leave the exercise of that option open for the future.” As the investors and several social bodies are alleging that the chit fund probe has slowed down during the last two months, sources said, the petitioner’s lawyer might raise the issue in the court and pray for court monitoring of the probe.
