local Congress MlA K Surya Rao along with auto-rickshaw and other motor vehicle drivers on Friday staged a demonstration in front the Regional Transport Office (RTO) here to press for fulfilment of drivers’ demands.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of agitators held a road blockade at Ranipentha square in Gajapati district against autocracy of the district RTO officials.
The agitators alleged that Transport Department officials are collecting hefty fines from the drivers and when they fail to pay the fine the vehicles are being seized.
Such high-handedness of the authorities has led to resentment among the poor drivers.
However, they withdrew the demonstration after In-charge Transport Officer Basant Mahapatra, Additional Sub-Collector Dhrubaraj Pandey, SDPO Thakur Prasad Patra held discussion with the MlA and assured to fulfil their demands.
Among others, Basant Panda and Sudhiranjan Mahapatra were present.
