Farmers in the Mahanga area of Cuttack district have expressed strong resentment over non-payment of compensation for the crops damaged in the cyclone Phailin in 2013.
According to information, thousands of farmers are now waiting for the Government assistance to compensate their losses. Though agriculture officers had conducted a survey in the area and subsequently submitted a report to their higher authorities, people are yet to be informed about the decision.
When contacted, Mahanga Tehsildar Pradip Sahu said, “The report submitted by Agriculture Officers is not correct. A fresh survey would be conducted to know actual figures of crops damaged in the Phailin.” Intellectuals have opined that it would not be possible on the part of the administration to gather actual information on damaged crops as two years have already passed since the Phailin hit the State.
