The negligence and step-motherly attitude of the State Government towards the Ganjam College has given rise to serious public discontentment, sources said.
Notably, the college had become the worst victim of Phailin ravages and the subsequent incessant rains that substantially damaged the infrastructure of the college, including its class rooms.
Even after lapse of nine months of the cyclone, the college is not able to repair and renovate its infrastructure due to lack of funds, causing serious inconvenience to the
students. Without Government assistance, the college is not in a position to reconstruct the damaged class rooms.
According to information available, the college authorities have already submitted detail report pertaining to the quantum of damage caused by the Phailin and financial assistance required to restore the infrastructure.
Though the Sub-Collector of Chatrapur and the Regional Director of Higher Education in the past reportedly had visited the college to estimate the post-Phailin damage, yet no action in the matter was taken,
sources added.
No financial assistance has yet been received from the State Government to undertake the repair and renovation work of the classrooms, said principal of the College, Dr Subash Chandra Naik. The cyclone Phailin severely damaged three class rooms, an auditorium hall, science laboratory, and ladies common room of the college. Since the academic session has already started, the problem of conducting classes will be adversely affected, apprehended many students.
Due to lack of class rooms in particular, the college is able to conduct only eight classes a day instead of 12, they said. It may be mentioned here that, 1,580 students are currently studying in the college. Former Assembly Deputy Speaker Rama Chandra Panda urged the Government to immediately provide required financial assistance to undertake reconstruction, repair and renovation work of the college infrastructure.
