The BJP State Krushak Morcha on Monday demanded compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of Bijay Thapa, a farmer of Tikira village in Bargarh district, who committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden on Saturday.
A team jointly led by Morcha president Maheswar Sahu and secretary Aswini Kumar Sarangi visited the deceased farmer’s family. Thapa died after consuming pesticide and his son, Thabir (25), also attempted to kill himself. Thabir is now undergoing treatment at the VSS Medical College Hospital. Thapa had a loan burden of Rs 1.30 lakh.
