PNS

People of Cuttack, more particularly the residents in and around Madhupatna Square, heaved a sigh of relief on Monday afternoon after an lPG gas tanker, which had overturned here on Sunday night, was rescued successfully averting a major tragedy.

“Struggling for over four hours, personnel from State police, fire brigade and disaster rapid action force successfully retrieved the tanker under the supervision of a Factories and Boiler Inspection team,” said city traffic ACP PK Dalei, adding that the tanker would be removed from here soon.

The stretch of over bridge between river Kathajodi and Madhupatna Square on NH-16, where the gas tanker had turned turtle, is fast turning out to be a nightmare for heavy vehicle drivers as four separate mishaps involving heavy vehicles have occurred here in last three days.

While one person was injured in the mishap, traffic on the highway was paralysed throughout the day.

Heavy vehicles were seen parking on the NH up to Manguli on the north and Nakhara on the south. “light vehicles were allowed to move on taking diversions,” Dalei said.

Earlier, the police had warned the residents of nearby localities not to visit the mishap site and the shopkeepers of the market were asked to down their shutters.
