The Union Government has asked the State Government to repeal some obsolete and redundant laws, which had been enacted by the State Assembly years ago and have no relevance. Some of the laws to be repealed by the Odisha Assembly include the Orissa Weights and Measures (Delhi Repeal) Act 1958, Orissa Appropriation (Vote On Account) 1980 and the Orissa Appropriation Act.

Ministry of law and Justice Secretary Sanjay Singh has written to the State Government in this regard, according to sources. “The Union law Ministry has appealed to all the States to repeal redundant laws, which have no relevance now. The Odisha Government has been asked to repeal many such laws,” said an official. According to Singh, the law Commission and the PMO-appointed Ramanujam Committee have recommended for repeal of such Acts. A total of 289 Acts, including 144 State Appropriation Acts, are likely to be repealed by various States. These redundant Acts are needed to be repealed by the State legislatures, said the official.
