Governor Dr SC Jamir, on a recommendation of the State Government, promulgated an Ordinance empowering the Government to formulate laws to implement the Odisha Official language Act 1954 in order to ensure use of Odia in all Government systems.

As per the Ordinance titled Odisha Official language (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016 enforced on May 21, the Government will amend the language Act when the State Assembly is not in session and use Odia in writing files, letters and all other documents prepared by the Government.

The Odia Bhasha Sangram Samiti welcomed the Government for promulgation of the Ordinance.

“The fifth meeting of the Ministerial Committee on language had decided to amend the Odisha Official language Act in order to ensure early use of Odia in the whole governance system. The Ordinance is commendable,” said Samiti president Shankarsan Parida.
