As the prices of onion has been spiralling, the State Government on Wednesday asked the district Collectors to take measures to make the essential vegetable onion available at Government fair price shops and Maitree outlets at no-profit-no-loss rate.
The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Secretary wrote a letter to the Collectors in the connection.
The Government took the decision after the onion price has skyrocketed from Rs 45 to Rs 70 per kg in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and other places.
The Government has asked the district administrations to procure onion from local markets and sell it to consumers through Government fair price shops and Maitree outlets.
Traders at Chhatra Bazaar in Cuttack and Unit-I daily market in Bhubaneswar attributed the price rise to fall in production and crop loss due to rains in Nasik in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, from where bulk of the onion is procured.
