One more African lion dies at Nandankanan

PNS

One more African lion died in safari at the Nandankanan Zoological Park on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.

Although the exact reason of the eight-year-old male lion’s death was yet to be clear, it was believed to be suffering from some kind of infection.

The zoo authorities said the lion, which had been brought from the Tel Aviv Zoo in Israel, suddenly fell ill and was undergoing treatment at the zoo.

The cause of death would be ascertained after postmortem.

Now, the total number of lions at the Nandankanan zoo has come down to 12. The latest was the second lion casualty in August. Earlier, an African lion had died at the age of eight on August 10 while undergoing treatment at the zoo.

Notably, four lions were brought to Nandankanan from Israel in the year 2015 with an aim to increase their population in the lion safari.

Usually, the lifespan of lions is approximately 15 years. However, the death of two lions in a month has become a big concern for the Nandankanan authorities.
