One crore eggs a day; 1 lakh broiler meat a year

PNS

In a bid to produce one crore eggs per day and one lakh tonnes of broiler meat per annum in the State by 2020, a poultry policy is being mulled by the State Government soon.

A meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary JK Mohapatra was held in Friday to examine the details of a Draft State Poultry Policy.

Development Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi and ACS to Chief Minister, Upendra Nath Behera were among the high officials present during the discussions

Mohapatra directed the concerned officials to carve out a roadmap to enable a favourable environment for commercial poultry farming and to promote backyard poultry farming in a big way. A presentation on the proposed policy framework was done by Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (DoFARD) Bishnupada Sethi.

A senior DoFARD official said the policy would aim to address various inter-linked concerns through a simultaneous and multipronged action with an emphasis on improvement in production technology and infrastructure, driving capital formation, restructuring the incentives and streamlining the institutions for poultry development.

With the National livestock Mission in place, the State would take advantage of the policy framework and plans to add 60 lakh new capacities in the commercial layer farming and expansion of 10 lakh capacities in the next four years, he said.

Accordingly, the State Government has notified an upper cap of Rs 75 lakh towards Capital Investment Subsidy (CIS) for establishment a new poultry layer farm and expansion of an existing one.

The official said additional capacity in hybrid broiler farming would be made in the next four years with 10,000 farmers being facilitated to go for backyard poultry per annum.

Hybrid broiler farms up to 5,000 birds would be set up in convergence with the National livestock Mission (NlM) to avail 25 per cent CIS under the Poultry Venture Capital Fund, said the officer.

The State Poultry Breeding Farms would be strengthened under the NlM. Assistance under the State livestock Mission for Rural Backyard Poultry Production would be made available through the policy. Rearing of ducks and Japanese quails would be encouraged in some niche areas and duck-fish farming would be tried in suitable zones, he said.

Marketing support would be available under the National Mission for Food Processing Policy. A 25-per cent of cost of plant and machinery and technical civil works with an upper cap of Rs 50 lakh is available as subsidy for establishment of poultry processing units.
