The State did not purchase milk-related products like ghee, butter and cheese from other States as the Omfed’s milk collection grew by 22 per cent in 2015-16. However, the State-run milk firm now sends balance milk to other States to convert the same to skimmed milk power as its powder plant’s capacity is very low.

Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Pradeep Maharathy informed this in the State Assembly on Wednesday in response to a question of Congress MlA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

The State had sent 1.90 crore kg milk to other States for making skimmed milk powder in 2015-16, the Minsiter informed.

The Minister said the Sweta Biplab (White Revolution) has been successful unexpectedly in State with milk production reaching 52 lakh kg per day, and the Omfed collecting more than 10 per cent of it.

“When Sweta Biplab started in 1981-82, a total of 2785 litres of mild was being produced daily while the daily production reached 5.5 lakh litre in 2015-16. Similarly, the number of milk societies has increased from 119 to 6,681 and farmers from 6,681 to 2,79,261 during the period between 1980 and 2015-16.
