Lawyers of the Orissa High Court here on Friday, the last working day before summer vacation, attended the court wearing black badges in protest against the attempts being made by the Collegiums to recommend names of outside law practitioners to be elevated as judges of the High Court.
A resolution to this effect had unanimously been passed by the High Court Bar Association on Thursday. “We have also resolved to boycott the court Collegiums after the summer vacation from June 17,” informed association secretary Sanjay Kumar Das.
The association has also decided to approach the President of India, the Prime Minister, the Union Law Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Odisha Governor for their interventions in nipping in the buds “an unprecedented approach” in filling up the vacancies of the judges in the High Court.
According to an age-old practice, only names of regular practising advocates of the High Court were recommended by the High Court Collegiums to the Supreme Court Collegiums for considerations so as to be elevated as judges of the concerned High Court.
“We have enough indications to suggest that the present Collegiums of the High Court are seriously mulling the idea of recommending the names of some Odia law practitioners of the Supreme Court bar to be considered for appointment of judges of the Orissa High Court,” Das said.
