PNS

A meeting between Odisha and Jharkhand officials would take place on August 7 at Baripada on Subarnarekha flood management.

Water Resources Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena told reporters here that Water Resources Chief Engineers of both the States along with other senior officials would attend the meeting to find out strategies to control flood situation in Subarnarekha basin.

Floods in Subarnarekha wreaked havoc in Baleswar and Mayurbhaj districts recently damaging properties worth crores of rupees.

Though the State Government proposes several projects to control floods in the river system every year, the proposals gather dust once the normalcy is restored.

Non-execution of Subarnarekha Sanskar Yojana (SSY) and delay in renovation of coast canal are main reasons for frequent floods in the river, sources said.

It flows for 79 km in Baleswar and Mayurbhanj districts in the State before joining the Bay of Bengal near Kirtania.

North Baleswar region and parts of Mayurbhanj experience massive flood even if there is no rain due to the huge catchment area of the river.
