No fire safety: City hotel basement sealed

PNS

Two halls in the basement of a hotel in the city were sealed on Friday by Fire Services personnel as part of a crackdown on commercial establishments that have failed to comply with fire safety norms.

Hotel Suryansh was the second one in Bhubaneswar that faced similar action from the department within a month. Earlier, the basement of Hotel Marrion at Ram Mandir Square had been sealed.

Marriage and other functions were held in the basement of Hotel Suryansh  in violation of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (Planning and Building Standards) Regulations, 2008, informed sources.

Earlier on Monday, 13 teams of Odisha Fire Services had conducted raids on 26 such establishments including shopping malls, hotels and jewellery showrooms in the State to check adherence to Odisha Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Rules, 2017. While some buildings lacked no-objection certificates (NoCs), others did not have the required firefighting equipments and smoke detectors in place.

Reports said the Fire Services had sent notices to the establishments that had violated the fire safety norms. On Friday, the sealing was carried out by virtue of the notice served to the establishment.
