No farmer died due to crop loss, debt: Govt

DEBADAS PRADHAN

The State Government on Friday claimed that not a single farmer suicide case was due to crop loss and loan burden.

Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra told reporters here that no farmer in the State has committed suicide because of crop failure and massive debt burden.

“The Government has received 111 farmer suicide cases allegedly due to crop loss and loan burden. Meanwhile, 106 cases have been examined by the concerned district Collectors. The reports of the Collectors don’t show that ay farmer took the extreme step because of crop failure and loan burden,” he said.

Mohapatra further informed that of the total 106 cases already investigated, 56 farmers hadn’t taken any loan while 26 had taken loans from cooperative banks and 16 had taken crop loans from nationalised or private banks.
