The Nilgiri police have begun an investigation in a dowry torture case in which all the accused persons including the husband of the victim were absconding. According to sources, victim Mamata Das of Natapada village under Matiali of Nilgiri block had been solemnised with Gautam Pradhan of Tindesh village under Narasinghpur panchayat of same block on May1 last year.
Dowry articles including cash were given to the groom as per demand. Yet, Gautam’s family members were not satisfied with the dowry items and demanded more. When they could not get more dowries, they started torturing Mamata both physically and mentally. Recently, Mamata’s parents had paid Rs2 lakh to her in-laws. Still, they wanted more and there was no let-up in the harassment meted out to the victim. The greedy in-laws even allegedly tried to set Mamata on fire by pouring kerosene on her body. Somehow, the victim was rescued and she went to police straightaway to lodge her FIR.
