NHRC urged to probe K'mal encounter

Samajawadi Party, Odisha State Committee on Saturday urged National Human Rights Commission to send an investigation team to the Kandhamal encounter site, where six innonent tribal people were killed on Friday, and take actions against guilty soon.

“Six innocent tribal people died in an indiscriminate firing resorted to by CRPF personnel during a combing operation against Maoists. Such irresponsible and indiscriminate firing is violative of standard operating procedure and also against the guidelines of the Supreme Court,” alleged party State president Rabi Behera in a letter to the NHRC.

Stating’ that the State Government’s announcement of Rs 5 lakh to each deceased’s family and a judicial inquiry are insufficient, Behera demanded free treatment to the injured and dismissal of all police officers responsible for the ghastly ‘murder’ of innocent daily labourers.

The State Government’s claim of a reduction in the leftwing extremism has been proved wrong by this incident, Behera wrote.

He informed the NHRC that 12 people have died in a year in Odisha in the name of combing operation by the CRPF and police personnel.

Nisanguda encounter in Kalahandi District last year, Maraguda encounter in Kandhamal few months back and yesterday’s encounter are few examples of police excess in Odisha, Behera said.

“Under such circumstances, we request you to send an investigation team to the incident site and issue an order for necessary disciplinary action against all guilty,” urged Behera.
