The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from Odisha police over the rape and murder of a 6-year- old girl in Baleswar district.
Acting on a petition filed by rights activist and Supreme Court lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC sought the response within four weeks.
On April 25 last, the deceased girl’s body was found on the banks of Sone river in Narlapatna area in Baleswar. The little girl, whose father is no more, was missing. later her body was found with multiple injury marks.
The police failed to trace her even if she was missing and was raped and murdered. Her family lives under a kutcha house. The mother of the deceased has also been deprived of widow pension and a house under IAY or any other housing schemes of the Government, Tripathy pointed out.
The failure of the Odisha police and district administration to act over the issue amounts to serious violation of human rights, Tripathy alleged.
He requested the NHRC to investigate the case and seek a detailed
report from the DGP, Odisha and Baleswar district Collector to arrest the culprits, ensure the deceased’s mother gets pension and a house under IAY or any other housing schemes besides a compensation of Rs5 lakh.
