PNS

The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Odisha IG Prisons to submit an action taken report on the acquitted prisoners and the money paid to them by the authorities for the work they did in jail.

The NHRC directed the report to be submitted within eight weeks.

Earlier, civil society organisation Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain in a petition to the NHRC alleged that through RTI it was ascertained that many acquitted prisoners have not been paid their daily, monthly income by the jail authorities for the services rendered in jail.

She alleged that the victims have not only lost their income but the right to live with dignity.

Swain prayed the national human rights body to compensate all the acquitted persons of the State according to their income in daily, monthly, yearly basis as well as to take departmental action against the officials responsible for the lapses.
