Acting on a petition filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the School and Mass Education department Secretary to file a report over human rights violation of two girl students within eight weeks.
Swain alleged that Kurmiguda Government Primary School Headmistress Kamala Saraf in Jharsuguda district has forced two Class V girl students to clean the school latrine and toilet with bare hands as punishment. The petitioner urged the commission to take legal action against the responsible, besides requesting it to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the two girl students.
