The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Sundargarh Superintendent of Police (SP) for an action-taken report (ATR) over illegal arrest of a minor boy showing him as an adult.

The commission directed the top cop to comply with the order within four weeks.

Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain had moved the apex human rights watchdog alleging that the Sundargarh police arrested a Class X student of Kanika High School and put him in jail though he was a minor.

“The victim is just a Class X student and about 15 years-old. But the Sundargarh district police officials arrested him mentioning him as an adult in records,” said Swain in her petition, adding that though the victim’s parents showed the police the proof age, but to no avail.

The petitioner urged the commission to take criminal/disciplinary action against the errant police officials. He also urged the commission to direct the administration to set the boy free and a compensate `10 lakh to the victim.
