The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Energy Secretary and the Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police (SP) calling for action-taken reports (ATR) on the death father-son duo at Machapada under Betnoti block in the district onJuly 3.
Acting on petition filed by Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the commission directed the two officials to file reports within four weeks.
“One Baisnab Patra (45) and his two sons Mohan (18) and Bhawani (15) were busy in plucking bitter ground from their farmland when the 11-kv livewire fell on them. The trio sustained serious injuries. However, Baishnab and Mohan died while Bhawani was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after his condition deteriorated,” the petitioner contended.
She urged the rights body to take criminal action against the public authorities responsible for the incident and direct the Government to provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family and Rs 5 lakh towards treatment of Bhawani.
