Dissatisfied over the report of Puri district Collector and SP in the case of sexual harassment to a group of children by a French tourist in Puri last year, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a reinvestigation by the Crime Branch (CB) and submit a report within four weeks.
The commission while acting on a complaint filed by human rights activist Akhanda also asked DGP Sanjeev Marik to take strict actions against the officials responsible for the escape of the French tourist.
On November 26 last year, one James Foster Gorman, an American tourist, lodged a complaint with the local police alleging that he saw the French tourist, Mathew Furic, performing oral sex with the children.
Though police registered a case against Furic for allegedly sexually abusing a group of children and raided the hotel where the French tourist was staying, it was found that he had left the city on November 26 itself.
Akhanda moved the commission alleging that the French tourist managed to flee due to the negligence of the local police.
