National policy for love marriage demanded

Concerned over cases of love-married couples committing suicide after being unaccepted by parents, the Freethought Party of India has suggested to the Government to provide protection to such couples by adopting a national love marriage policy.

“To make India a land of equals and free from divisive forces, we must have a national policy to acknowledge love marriages,” Freethough Party general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire said in a statement.

He urged the Government to open free secular love marriage registration offices at gram panchayat and urban body offices. In addition, newly-wedded couples, who are being targeted by their caste-minded parents, must be accommodated in national-level hostels for safety.

Besides, there should not be any age limit for lovers to marry, he suggested.

Referring to an incident in which a newlywed couple Nalini Podha and Amitav Barik of Redhakhole committed suicide by jumping before a running train recently, Voltaire said precious lives of such young men and women can be saved once a national marriage reformation comes into being. Ultimately, it would pave ways for non-caste politics and option of any caste reservation, he opined.
