The World Elephant Day was celebrated at the Nandankanan Zoological Park here on Sunday.
A one-and-a-half-year-old elephant calf named ‘Mama’ was the main attraction of the event. Zoo Director Dr Hari Shankar Upadhyaya fed the baby elephant fruits marking the beginning of the celebrations.
Fruits were also provided to other elephants of the zoo. A general meeting and a quiz on protection of the pachyderms were organised. School students, Nandankanan staff and tourists took part.
The World Elephant Day is observed for preservation and protection of elephants around the globe on August 12 every year.
