Villagers of Namtara in Kendrapada district, who had been injured in police firing while opposing a liquor shop in the village in March, approached the State Human Rights Commission seeking compensation and more treatment facility on Thursday.
The villagers had ransacked the Government liqour shop on the last World Women’s Day on March 8 after their repeated requests for shifting the shop fell on deaf ears of the Excise Department and district administration. While a faceoff persisted for five hours, the Rajkanika police reportedly opened fire at them without a magisterial permission.
Many people were
injured and eight of them, including two children, received bullet injuries, alleged the Milita Odisha Nisha Nivaran Mahch.
“They remained under treatment in the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack for over a month. Though bullets have been taken out from their bodies, yet they have not been fully cured. Hence, they have approached the SHRC seeking Rs 10 lakh compensation and more treatment facility,” informed Manch members.
Among others, manch members Priti Nayak, Santosh Panda, Santosh Ransingh, Tuna Swain, Pratap
Sahu, Malati Patra and Madhumita Samal accompanied the villagers.
