Nalco construction triggers' unrest

PNS

The construction of a boundary wall of Nalco in Damanjodi of the district on Saturday triggered unrest among villagers of Ambogaon.

The district administration clamped Section144 of CrPC in the area and deployed four platoons of police force to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Sources said the locals have been protesting construction of the boundary wall by the Nalco for long, demanding fulfilment of their various demands, including jobs in the company. Over a hundred villagers, including schoolchildren, staged a demonstration displaying various placards that brought the construction to a halt.

Besides employment, the protestors demanded compensation to farmers, supply of fodder for the cattle as there is no grazing land for their livestock and Rs 5 lakh per annum assistance towards the development of the locality.

“The work order for construction of the boundary wall was given seven to eight months back. Discussions on the matter have been held with the local representatives several times. We are looking for an amicable settlement,” said Koraput Sub-Collector Krutibasa Rout.
