Modi taking people for a ride: CPM

SUMEET SHARMA

The Indian Constitution rests on three pillars, namely liberty, equality and fraternity, and now there is a threat on these pillars, said Communist Party of India (CPI-Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury at a State-level conference here on Saturday.

Yechury said people’s struggle in the country against the BJP-led NDA Government would not only be for a political change but a policy change. He cautioned that the country had got freedom by people’s struggle against the British and not by winning election.

Mentioning about allowing the Flipkart to sell its share to the US firm Wallmart, he said now products produced in our country would not be sold by our own traders rather the Wallmart would get full permission to sell the products, which is a conspiracy to destroy retail market of the country. Yechury alleged that the Modi Government had failed to fulfil its promises as more than 60,000 farmers had committed suicide due to debts. He flayed the Central Government for saying to the Supreme Court that it doesn’t have money to waive the loans of the farmers, while on the contrary, revealing in the Parliament that it has waived Rs 2, 64, 000 crore of loan of the capitalists.

Mentioning about job opportunities, he said the Government had promised to provide 2 crore jobs for youths in a year but now the data of this year says 9.6 crore have been sacked from the jobs.

He said if the youths of the country, which constitute a majority of the population, are given education, health and jobs, they can form a new India.

lamenting on the Modi Government, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda is not to allow people to think by announcing daily new schemes and take people for a ride so that they are kept far from the reality.

Yechury said, “We are in good terms with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and we want BJD to come forward to stop the BJP.” He also said the future strategy would be decided by the CPM Committee. Asked about the formation of an anti-BJP front or third front without the Congress, Yechury said going by the country’s political history, such an alliance is formed always after the elections.

To save the Constitution and the country, Yechury urged the leftists and all secular forces to back the people’s struggle and pressurise the ruling BJP Government to change the policies as per the peoples’ need. CPI (M) State secretary Ali Kishore Patnaik and State Council members Janarthan Pati and Suresh Panigrahi also spoke on the occasion.
