The arrest of a Cuttack corporator in a land fraud case took a new turn on Friday when the corporator’s wife pointed fingers at local ruling party MlA Debashis Samantray for hatching a conspiracy.
The MlA, who is also a candidate for the April 17 elections, was quick to rebut the allegations.Sweekriti Das, wife of arrested corporator Chittaranjan Das, said the MlA was putting pressure on her husband to join the BJD. Chittaranjan had won the February 6 CMC elections as an Independent corporator.
“When my husband refused to join his party, the MlA acted in an unkind manner by using the police against him,” Sweekriti alleged. Samantray, however, denied the allegations, saying Chittaranjan, in fact, had approached him several times to join the BJD.“The Crime Branch must have got some prima facie evidence for which the corporator was arrested. I don’t have any role in it,” the MlA said. The fugitive corporator was arrested in New Delhi earlier this week and was brought here on transit remand.
Meanwhile, the Crime Branch police on the day raided Chittaranjan’s house and seized several incriminating documents, including a laptop and a pen drive.Sources said the police would move the appropriate court to take the accused in remand for further questioning.
