The Odisha Minority Forum has expressed its support for the decision of noted poet and writer Jayant Mahapatra of returning the Padma Shri award to the President and termed it as Mahapatra’s dissent owing to ‘moral asymmetry’ in the society.
The forum strongly feels that Mahapatra has responded to the ‘voice of his conscience’ and his decision should open forums for greater debate into the form of intolerance that is being played out in the country over the past several months, said forum president Dr Sasmit Patra.
“India is a secular country but the right-wing discourse of intolerance being played out is unfortunate. Elements of right-wing fundamentalism are seen gaining passive support from people who should be instrumental in suppressing them. At such a time, Mahapatra has the conviction and courage to stand up against the growing intolerance”, he added.
This should serve as an inspiration for those who are dedicated to the cause of protecting the secular fabric of India. When noted intellectuals like Mahapatra come forth with strong voices of dissent, they should be heard carefully than dismissed with disdain, he added.
