The Mohana Childline has rescued a 15-year-old girl from being forced to marry a 50-year-old man from Delhi at Jhotinagar village under Karachabadi gram panchayat in Gajapati district recently.
According to information, family members had married off the girl a year ago. However, the girl came back to the parental house after a few months as in-laws tortured her and attempted to kill her by pouring kerosene.
But her woes didn’t end there. After being tortured by her drunkard father, the girl moved to Goa with a cousin sister and worked there as a housemaid.
The girl returned home on May 5. During this period, a relative grandfather, who works in Delhi, convinced the family to marry off the girl to a 50-year-old man by offering various allurements. The girl didn’t agree to this proposal and attempted to commit suicide. However, the victim’s uncle came to her rescue and informed the Childline.
Childline worker Samarendra Jena along with police and Childline Prevention Officer Kuntala Kumari Nayak reached the family and rescued the girl. By that time, the man had managed to flee from the area.
