A high-level meeting for applying for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the famous sweet Rasgola was held at the Directorate of Industries here on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Director of Industries had notified the Secretaries of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Science and Technology, MSME and Culture Departments for the meeting for finalisining modalities for applying for the tag.

An eight-member panel set up by the State Government discussed the issue. The committee had earlier submitted its report to the Government in which it cited several references to stake claim to the origin of the delicacy in Odisha. The origin of the sweet has led to a tug-of-war between Odisha and West Bengal with each claiming to be its place of origin.

Meanwhile, the State Government has also decided to set up a Rasgola cluster at Pahal on the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack highway at an estimated cost of Rs7.70 crore. Pahal now has about 50 Rasgola shops.
