The Mahanadi Coalfields limited (MCl) has become the number one coal producer in the country by producing a record 137.90 million tonne (MT) of coal in the financial year 2015-16, contributing 39% to the growth of the Coal India limited (CIl).

“The MCl is in number one position because it is located in the land of lord of Jagannath. We have ample amount of coal in Odisha. Cutting all barriers, we achieved a double digit growth,” said MCl CMD AK Jha at a Press meet here inTuesday.

The MCl dispatched 140.22 MT of coal to the consumers compared to 123 MT indicating a growth of 14 per cent, Jha informed.

The MCl has gross turnover of Rs 19,053.15 crore in FY 2015-16 against the turnover in 2014-15 of Rs 15,693.71 crore  “Our target for next year in coal production is 167 MT and for the year 2020, the target is 250 MT,” he added.

With an objective of developing railway infrastructure in Odisha, the MCl has partnered with the IRCON International ltd and the Idco to jointly form a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the Mahanadi Coal Railway ltd.

Jha said one of the foremost activities of the company is to develop the Angul-Balram rail link covering around 14 km length in the initial phase with a capacity to transport 92 million tonne of coal.

The rail link would complete the loop Angul-Balaram-Talcher Angul to facilitate unidirectional movement of wagons. The outcome would be increasing coal production through increased evacuation in Talcher Coalfields.

The company is expected to take up the Jharsuguda-Barpali-Sardege rail link, which would enable the Basundhara Coalfield to produce 85 MT as compared to its current production of 10 MT.

The MCl would build a 100-seat state-of-the-art Medical College and Hospital in Talcher Coalfield. The project work would be completed in two and half years time from the current fiscal. The academic session would commence from 2019-20.

Besides, Jha also discussed major CSR activities undertaken by the MCl.

Director (Technical/Operations) AK Tiwari, Director (Technical/Projects & Planning) JP Singh, Director (Finance) KK Parida and Director (Personnel) lN Mishra were present at the meet.
