The Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 30 lakh each to the families of the persons who were killed in a mine collapse mishap at the Bharatpur opencast coalmines in the Talcher Coalfields. The MCL authorities also assured a contractual job for a member of each family. The job would be regularised in a month, sources said.
A strata collapse at the Bharatpur mines on July 23 claimed lives of four workers and left nine persons injured.
Locals, who were on a strike since July 24 demanding a safety inspection of the Talcher Coalfields, a high-level probe into the incident and adequate compensation to the families of the deceased, withdrew their stir after a tripartite meeting with the Angul district Collector and the MCL authorities on Tuesday.
The strike had resulted in closure of several power plants in Odisha and other States which are dependent on the Talcher Coalfields for the supply of fuel.
