Days after threatening people to boycott the upcoming panchayat polls in the State, Maoists killed a ward member candidate of Bara village under the Mathili police limits in Malkangiri district late on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Dasu Dharua.
According to reports, about 20 armed Red rebels of the Darbha Division of the banned outfit CPI(Maoist) called Dharua out of his house on Thursday night before being shot dead them later.
Notably, Maoists, through posters, had earlier threatened people in the district to abstain from the rural polls or face dire consequences. The ultras had warned that those who would contest in the elections would face death punishment at Praja Court. The left extremists had further warned that thumbs of those casting their votes would be chopped off.
