Maoist killings acts of desperation, says DGP

Director General of Police Prakash Mishra on Saturday said the Maoists who have been pushed to the brink in Malkangiri district because of resolute actions by the police and other security forces are targeting ordinary people to give vent to their sense of frustration and to terrorise people into submission.

The Maoist terror in Malkangiri would end when the security forces deliver “a decisive blow” and “we are gearing up for that,” he said, adding that the day is not far off when that would happen.

In his reaction to the coldblooded murder of two villagers in Malkangiri on Friday night, Mishra told a news portal, “It is a battle for supremacy and the Maoists are fast losing out. That explains why they are resorting to such cowardly acts.”

He dismissed the Maoists’ claim that the people they killed were police informers. He said the police do not use local tribals as their agents as some people would like to believe. He said this in an obvious reference to a statement made by Maoist interlocutor Prof Hargopal to a local news channel on Saturday that the police should desist from using poor tribals as informers and put their lives to undue risk.

Mishra did not rule out the possibility of the Maoists continuing with the practice of abducting ordinary people and killing them in the near future, saying, “These bloodthirsty elements will continue to target poor villagers because they are in no position to take on the security forces. But that will end soon.”
