A person threw acid at his mother-in-law and 14-month-old daughter over a family dispute at Bhaliapatna village under the Tirtol police station in the district on Friday night.
The woman and the baby sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to the Manijanga Community Health Centre. later, they were shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as their conditions deteriorated.
Reports said one Swarnalata Samal, after having a marital discord with her husband Manas Ranjan Swain of Puri district, was staying at Bhaliapatna with her mother and daughter.
Though Manas had tried many times to bring back his wife, her mother Santilata was unwilling to allow Swarnalata to live with him once again.
On Friday night, Manas allegedly came to Bhaliapatna with a bottle containing acid and threw it at her mother-in-law. But his daughter was also injured in the process. Police have started investigation into the incident and are on the lookout for the accused.
