locals demand Kanji houses restarted

Smooth flow of traffic on roads of the Subarnapur district is regularly disturbed as stray cattle roam freely.

According to rules, the stray cattle should be caught and kept in Kanji houses, shelter homes where the animals are kept till they are claimed and taken away by their owners.

However, this doesn’t happen in all the six blocks namely Ullunda, Birmaharajpur, Binka, Dunguripali, Tarbha and Sonepur as the civic bodies don’t have any Kanji house.

Cows cross roads, dogs fight and herds of pigs move on the streets. This is a usual sight and in some localities of the town, these animals have created their permanent habitats, said Kalyan Dash, a resident of Sonepur.

In Tarbha, pigs sleep by roadside drenched in mud and filth. These pigs have become nuisance for the entire area. First they litter all the garbage from the bins, feed upon them and then leave stool here and there.

“Due to the dirtiness, it is horrible to move around. My small children play in the open and I always fear the menace of stray animals,” said Chandini Bhoi, a resident of Tarbha.

In past, Kanji Houses were in every Panchayat /NAC/ Municipality. It will be better, if it would be again started, opined Subarnapur Child Welfare Committee chairperson Chandra Shekhar Mishra.

“I have told several times in council meeting of Sonepur Municipality on the need to open Kanji houses. But it has fallen on deaf ear,” said Sonepur ward no 1 Councilor Tapas Beura.
